Wild West Ethos

By Annika Lee

found poem from Facebook comments on the 20 September 2021 New York Times article ‘Homeland Security investigates border patrol’s treatment of Haitian immigrants.’

Look closely

it’s not the Wild West.

Like master to slave

God is a whip

playing cowboys.

So, big man, how would you stop the runner

literally walking through jungle then desert

in their bones

an effigy

Come on.

Monsters live among us

I would know them anywhere.

here?

the game is simple.

treating desperate people like they would animals.

Round em up

a sport to them

What do you expect from the cowboys

“arrêt!”

Stop the madness!

that’s a human being

treated as less than human.

your son, daughter, mother, father.

It is shameful

cruelty

SHAME

For us to live

with dignity

record images on your mind that’ll never go away

break through that wall

take them to your house

stop the wars
