5 Things To Do Before You Graduate

By Gabriëlle La Croix

At UCR time flies, and that is a given. I remember the first day I walked through the doors of the old city hall and now graduation is creeping closer and closer. Before I know it, I will be gone and this has caused me to sit down and think about my time in Middelburg. What are the things I still want to do and what are the things I always enjoyed doing? So here – from the bottom of my memory jar and the ‘heights of my imagination’ – comes a concise version of what I want to do (or did) before I graduate and what I think you should do too.

  1. Climb the Lange Jan.

Let’s face it; you see this tower every day. Sometimes even more than once when you have actually decided to leave the comfort of your room. However, have you ever taken the time to see this old and famous tower from the inside? Unless you partook in this activity in Introweek or if you gave your family the full-fledged tour, I am guessing the answer is no. It took me two years to see it for myself, but the view from the Lange Jan is amazing. You can see the whole of our beloved Middelburg and, if you’re lucky, you can even see the sea. This is a definite must-see, and all those stairs to get up there are definitely worth it.

Tickets to climb the Lange Jan are €4,00. The exact opening hours can be found on their website.

  1. Have an ice coffee at St. John.

This one is for all you coffee lovers out there, the ones hanging around A Domani during the breaks between classes. Did you know that the little café St. John in the St. Jansstraat does the best ice-coffee in the whole of Zeeland? Say goodbye to your Starbucks Frappuccino’s and taste something a bit more original. Especially nice during ‘hot’ summer days but definitely not one to forget during the winter. A little birdy told me that even our alumni often miss this fabulous ice-coffee.

  1. Go to the beach at night.

This might seem like a strange one, but there is nothing more truly Dutch than going to the beach when it’s very windy, cold and dark outside. I will give you the tip to dress up in about 5 layers of clothes and wear a scarf, hat and gloves; otherwise you will freeze to death. Nice beaches to visit are for instance Domburg and Vlissingen. Especially Vlissingen makes for a nice sight at night with all the lights from the boulevard. It also makes for a great date! So if you are up for the bike ride, this is definitely one I would recommend.

  1. Have an “Appeltaartje” (little apple pie) at Seventy-Seven

When I tell you to have an apple pie at Seventy-Seven I am not talking about an actual pie, I am talking about the shot they sell which is called an “appeltaartje”. Yes, for those who are wondering it does indeed taste like apple pie. Consisting of a good mix of alcohol, apple juice, whipped cream and cinnamon, this is definitely one to try. I am in no way encouraging drinking, but an Appeltaartje is very delicious.

  1. Go to the cinema in Middelburg.

In case you did not know this, Middelburg does actually have a cinema. It might be really small and an art house cinema, but it is a cinema nonetheless. Plus they show very interesting films there; these might not be your major Hollywood blockbusters, but they remain very enjoyable. The location is also utterly gorgeous, as it is based in the Kloveniersdoelen, a building that dates from the 17th century and was used as a military hospital. So instead of Netflix and Chill by yourself, just pay a visit to this cute cinema. Maybe I’ll see you there.

Cinema Middelburg is located in the Kloveniersdoelen, Achter de Houtkaaien 30, in Middelburg. They program movies every single day. For students, movie tickets are €6,00.
