Given the small cosy nature of Middelburg, it is tempting for students to flock to the same bars, same coffee places, and the same restaurants. However, there actually exists a diverse assortment of international cuisines, two of which have received rave reviews, De Juf, and the new Amy’s and Ta. Though very different in nature, both De Juf and Amy’s and Ta are now considered a “must-try” and are truly deserving of at least one exploratory visit.
De Juf
Along the cobbled roads of Middelburg lies a small shop, providing tourists, residents, students, and café owners with a fantastical array of cakes, cookies, and crumbs. Gaining experience from baking cakes for Expresszo, the brains behind De Juf decided to start her own business after a hypothetical brainstorming session over a cup of coffee. The idea took on a life of its own, and on the 11th of October 2014 after months of planning and requesting permits, De Juf opened its doors to the public. Since opening it has gained popularity amongst the locals, their cakes now being sold at Expresszo and De Vriendschap.
This quaint little shop fits perfectly in the scenery and atmosphere of Middelburg. Its cosy setup and vintage feel combined with the scent of freshly baked cakes create the perfect temptation for some indulgent procrastination. Take a walk down to De Juf for a morning treat, an afternoon feast, or an evening dessert. Not only will these treats tickle your tastebuds, they are also made of natural and local ingredients, and 100% ‘Zeeuws’ wheat.

Recently opened in October of 2014, Amy’s and Ta Vietnamese cuisine is receiving outstanding reviews for its fresh and delicious dishes. One online reviewer described the new restaurant with a simple “nomnomnom,” which is strangely vague, but surprisingly accurate. Amy’s and Ta is now considered to have some of the tastiest true Vietnamese pho, and is known for its dedication to delivering its customers with fresh foods and homemade additions. Other reviewers have given the new place 4 and 5 star ratings, naming Amy’s as a “vacation on the Vlasmarkt.”
Amy’s specialties include Vietnamese Loempias, Vegetarian Loempias, Bakpao, Pastei, Risolles, shrimp dishes, and even the opportunity to create your own wok meal. In addition, Amy’s will soon be serving Bubble Tea, also known as pearl milk tea or boba milk tea, a Taiwanese tea-based drink with small bubbles usually made of tapioca. This type of drink has been gaining popularity across the world, especially in the United States, and will soon be a new addition to traditional Middelburg coffee and tea. Make sure to visit Amy and Ta’s and enjoy a delicious and fun way of drinking tea, Bubble Tea!
Amy’s and Ta is located on the Vlasmarkt 7, and is usually open from 12 to 2 in the morning. The restaurant is also available at the online site Thuisbezorgd, and delivers its fresh food to your location promptly. Check out Amy and Ta’s menu here: http://www.amysta-middelburg.nl/menu.
