The Roosettes: a group of talented young ladies singing vintage jazz swing-style songs in 50s fashion. Their original look and unique sound are just two reasons why their annual concert is not to be missed out on. On the 24th of April, the Roosettes will be holding their annual concert. For the third time you will be able to enjoy your favourite classics and new songs sang by your fellow students for only €3,50.
The Roosettes, named after Roosevelt Academy, were founded in 2010 by UCR alumni Anne Berrevoets and Ferra Heskin. They started a singing group consisting of twelve of their closest musical friends. Berrevoets and Heskin described their sound as “a close harmony group – so no girly, girly, high screaming, fragile sound, but a warm, soulful, powerful sound.” Nowadays this female barbershop ensemble would describe their style as vintage, jazz, swing music; a mixture of different sounds such as classics and new songs sung in the style of the 1930s to 1950s.
These talented students have performed at a variety of events, such as at parties, receptions, UCR events, and even at elderly homes. Singing songs such as ‘If I Had You’, ‘Come Fly With Me’, and ‘Java Jive’, the Roosettes manage to get everyone sing along and dance, from adolescents to the elderly. The Roosettes grow from these performances and enjoy them to the fullest extent, however the opportunity to perform in front of their fellow students, friends, and family does not come alone all too often. For this reason, they have decided to hold a concert specifically aimed to showcase what they have been doing for the past year.
The idea to hold a concert for friends, family, and fellow students originated three years ago. The first concert of this sort was held in De Spot. This was also the first time they introduced their now well-known vintage 50s look. After the big success of ‘Evening with the Roosettes’, they decided to make it an annual event. Last year it was held at HoneyPie. It was a 50s style night and included a dinner with the Roosettes, during which they would perform their current songs. This year they are back, and it will once again be held at De Spot. It is an evening here the Roosettes can show their new repertoire, and where friends and family can enjoy a nice evening with a lively atmosphere and great music.
Mark this date down in your calendar, as Friday the 24th will be a night in full motion of swing and soul. Expect good music, expect some classics, expect some new songs, and prepare for surprises. For only €3,50 you too can attend this spectacle.
