Battle of the Boards: Clash of the Titans meets Hunger Games

By Becci Fobbe

The annual battle of the boards for this semester’s Introweek can only be described as the following: Clash of the Titans meets Hunger Games. Not being able to pull of a Professor McGonagoll this time, but easily being able to star as Effie Trinket in her sparkly evening dress and her witty, sometimes slightly ‘mean’ comments, Professor Luscombe had the role of calling the first tributes on stage – or, into the fighting pit. The first task of the evening: wood chopping. Terrified first year students had to watch as the first four tributes, selected from each board, were to perform the infamous exercise, and seemed to suffer from severe memory loss as to what this exercise was actually about. All except for one GBM of the RASA board (names will not be mentioned), who shared her win with the HAC chair.

But not only members of our boards had to play their roles as tributes. The first board, Elliott, challenged four newbies as well as four board members to a good old round of karaoke. The stage was soon full of booties shaking and imaginary snowflakes falling, turning the whole audience into a choir that only the piano man in the end of the activity could top, leaving behind the semi emotional aftertaste of good Elliott party memories and excitement towards the new semester – and of course a RASA chair winner. Well done, Elliott.

The AAC followed, introducing our international kids to what Dutch people are known to be doing after having too much Heineken: ‘pooping nails’ into bottles and running around chairs which gradually get fewer. With two great Dutch party hits, ‘Drank en Drugs’ and ‘Sexy Als Ik Dans’ they really kept the party spirit inside De Spot going. This was only supported by the board members showing off their dance moves. Overall? Definitely a great idea, the only thing to worry about what that our Academic Affairs Council had difficulties in finding the correct translation for musical chairs.

But nevertheless, the party kept on going, being dragged on by the HAC inviting everybody to their ‘kiki’. Board members as well as new tributes had to show their first dancing skills in a good old dance off. And to be honest, nobody disappointed, even though tight running pants seemed to be a rather curious choice of style for some HAC members – seriously though: some of these moves are definitely ready for Elliott.

After three rounds of letting it all out, the level did not drop, but rose. To calm the excited crowd down a bit, RASA choose to introduce our newbies to the artsy side of the Viking spirit, introducing the board and every single member with a self-written poem and daring blindfolded participants of the evening (read: board members and tributes) to draw the RASA logo. Only the results showed how challenging this task actually proved to be and how little our different boards cared about each others logos.

The evening ended in a tie between AAC and RASA, which of course could only be resolved by another epic dance battle, a win that RASA took home. Congratulations to all the tributes and board members for being brave enough to get up on that stage and entertain the rest of us. A perfect start to a crazy Introweek.
