I’m meeting with Jelma Bil, five minutes before our French class, all the way up in Franklin. Surrounded by academics, Jelma, who 20 years old and from a teeny tiny town close to Middelburg, tells me why she’s running for AAC Internal Officer.
Why are you running for AAC Internal Officer?
I am running, because the position comes with a lot of freedom to organise stuff, which I really like. Of course, you have the set events, but you’re also kind of free to organize whatever you want. I also like the designing aspect of the position, which is awesome. You can add your personal touch to it.
What I like about AAC Internal Officer, is that you are helping people. Maybe not in such a way that people notice it – although Koen (Schotanus, red.) is everywhere – but I mostly just want to help people with their academic life. Nobody really knows what to do with their lives, so as AAC, you organize a Future Fair to help people figure out what to do.
But why run for AAC? Why not any other board?
Because when I came to UCR, I did not know what I wanted to do, and now I know that I want to do medicine. It probably was not the smartest thing, but I did figure it out. I think a lot of people at UCR still deal with this problem and by running for AAC Internal Officer, I just want to give back to the community. So I think the AAC is the perfect choice for me. I think… I hope.
And do you have any changes or improvements in mind if you do get elected?
I would like to put some time into the design of the AAC posters, because although I love the Photoshop-look, I want to make something really nice out of them.
And why should people vote for you?
I think I’m a capable person. I’m approachable and I like to think that I’m quite easy to talk to. I also have experience with design and I’m treasurer of the Graduation Week Team. I have some experience, but a lot of enthusiasm.
