What to Watch in Fall 2016

Coming Fall, a lot of films are scheduled to come to cinemas. In the sea of soon-to-be-released films, one might easily lose track of which films and on what dates they are going to be released. Fear not! In this little article you will find a neat overview of some of the most interesting films that are going to be released in the coming weeks, up to and including the Fall Break.

Snowden

The film follows the story of former NSA employee and whistleblower Edward Snowden, who leaked thousands of classified documents to the press in 2013. With Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the man himself, as well as Zachary Quinto and Shailene Woodley as the main cast, great performances are a no-brainer.

The Magnificent Seven

The Magnificent Seven focuses on the underdog story of seven gunmen in the old and wild west who gradually come together to protect a poor village from savage thieves. It’s action western from the director of films such as Training Day (2001) and The Equalizer (2014); this proves to be a wild ride indeed. It does not hurt either that the cast contains major stars like Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and more.

The Girl on the Train

If the trailer of this film reminds me of anything (go watch it!), it’s David Fincher’s Gone Girl (2014), simply because of its air (or rather, mist) of mystery and intrigue. This mystery thriller is the story of Rachel (Emily Blunt), a recent divorcee that becomes entangled in a missing person’s investigation. Based on the bestseller by Paula Hawkins, this film promises to be a thrill from start to finish, with performances by a cast with proven track-records (think Sicario (2015), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), Looper (2012), and more). Keep an eye out for this one!

The Accountant

Out of all the films listed here, I might personally be most excited about this one. The trailer alone deserves a prize, as it had me at the edge of my seat. From the director of the critically acclaimed film Warrior (2011), now comes the story of Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), a math savant turned forensic accountant that uncooks the books for various nefarious clients. Other than the amazing trailer, it is mostly the cast that has me excited for this one though; Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal, J.K Simmons, John Lithgow and more are starring in this thrilling crime drama.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

October 21

This year’s sequel to the 2012 Jack Reacher film is set to release at the beginning of our Fall Break. This year it’s up to director Edward Zwick, known for films like The Last Samurai (2003), Blood Diamond (2006) and Defiance (2013), to deliver a great film. This time around Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) is a fugitive from the law, trying to uncover the truth behind a major conspiracy in order to clear his name.

Inferno

This latest installment in the Robert Langdon series of films (and books) finds Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) waking up in an Italian hospital with memory loss. In order to prevent a deadly global plot, Langdon teams up with Dr. Sienna Brooks to race across Europe against the clock. Like previous installments, Inferno is directed by Ron Howard, and features a great cast: Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones, Ben Foster and Omar Sy.

Steven van de Graaf, Class of 2017, is a Physics and Computer Science major from Barendrecht, The Netherlands.
