Røst: sounds Scandivian, feels warm.

Røst is a newly opened café located in St. Janstraat, a couple meters away from the café St John’s. Although you probably are familiar with the warmth of St John’s and you rightly appreciate Robuust’s coffees, if you are looking for an in-between of coziness and a cool environment, Røst is your best shot! After Robuust, their coffee is the best in town and is in fact less expensive than the latter by 30-40cts. It can get a bit bitter, so maybe avoid double shots.

With their couch setting, you can make yourself comfortable very easily. The background music allows for copious amounts of concentration in that café. With relaxing jazz music and Brazilian vibes, Røst has it all! Be it group studying, or studying alone, Røst has a pleasing environment because it provides space for everyone. Feel like you are drowning in deadlines, don’t have time to grab breakfast or cook in general? Not to worry! They also have some breakfast and snack options, which are reasonable in price, yet still filling and made fresh on the spot. Aesthetically, they look really pleasing!

Apart from their aesthetic, the hospitality of the cafe is quite unique. The people working there are really friendly and welcoming – and they give you unlimited water, which as we all know turns out crucial during studying. When it comes to food, their prices are reasonable: 4 euros for a bowl of soup served with bread and butter. You can really taste the freshness of what they serve; if you go there in the morning you can witness them cook and bake the day menu. They occasionally serve pies and they try to serve different types everyday! We don’t know to what extent you like studying in savory, and sweet brownie smells but we do!

They sometimes serve a small piece of brownie or cookies, which for some are a nice balance. Their desserts are perhaps, for Dutch standards normal sweet, and their coffee has a good strong taste. They have non-dairy options with soymilk, but also provide lactose free milk.

What it has best to offer:

  • Very kind owners as in they will never get tired of you
  • Unlimited water
  • Really nice music!
  • Nice decoration: not too hipster (Robuust) not too pre-war chimney-like either (St John’s).
  • A relaxing vibe, and we believe the owners to be one of those really chill couples, who, like wine, get nicer with age. #UCRcoupleslistencloselyplease

Downsides:

  • German visitors?
  • One other downside seems to be the isolation, during weekdays it is not crowded but the noise there spreads quite fast so you could not possibly study there when it gets full.

If you’re looking for a refreshing place to study, relax or read – give Røst a shot! You can also get a fidelity card from the place, similar to other coffee places, once the card is full (10 stamps), you get that free coffee you deserve! On weekends Røst closes around 17:00 and on weekdays it is open till 17:30. If you’re planning on checking this place out, I personally would advice going during the week because weekends are too busy.
