In The Spotlight: GamesCo and ArtCo

Are you looking for some time off? Are you sick of doing your homework? Do you just want some relaxation? Well, then these two societies might be something to go and check out!

If you are interested in board games, videogames, and any other sort of games you can imagine, then GamesCo is the thing for you! Every Thursday from 20.00 until Eleanor closes and they get kicked out, GamesCo facilitates the perfect social setting to get together with friends and play games. They either choose (new) video games or they will select some board games, but they give a guarantee that there is a balance between the two and that any game lover will find something to their fancy.

They also have some bigger games planned for the semester. During the Night of the Night (the night when Middelburg will be clothed in darkness to raise awareness for air- and light-pollution) GamesCo will organize a living stratego in the dark on the Abbey Square. They are also busy arranging a poker tournament and a League of Legend’s tournament (for all you LoL-ers out there that know this game, you may get excited).

Another interesting project is their gaming marathon. Participants are going to be sponsored to play games for a really, really long time and all the revenues will go to a children’s hospital. A pretty awesome project if I say so myself. If you want more information on any of the projects then do email the board ([email protected]).

Anyone who wants to join is welcome and GamesCo’s main goal for this year is to expand their membership base, and to show to the community that they exist. So help GamesCo reach this goal and go to their meeting! It is all about having fun through playing a variety of games. Cool people, rejoice!

The second society in the spotlight this issue is ArtCo. They are all about organizing weekly workshops as a creative outlet. They have done painting, making soap chains, and henna workshops. They meet every Tuesday from 20:00 – 22:00 in the ArtCo room on the first floor in Theodore. When you go up the stairs, to your right is the little corridor with the classrooms. Just keep on walking and there is a door. Always wondered what’s behind that door? Well… That’s the ArtCo room!

For this semester they have a very special collaboration planned with PhoRA (the photography society), PUMA (Participating Uniting Middelburg Association), and the Sustainability Committee. The project is called “Humans of Middelburg” and it is based on a project in New York with the same name. PhoRA and PUMA take pictures of local Middelburgers and PUMA actually asks the people questions. Then ArtCo and the Sustainability Committee are going to make picture frames out of garbage, and the works will be displayed in Ko d’oooooooor.

So if you want to be a part of this amazing project then email ArtCo to be put on the mailing list, for more information will follow in their weekly newsletters ([email protected]). On their Facebook page, you can also find information about their meetings and the type of workshops that they arrange.

ArtCo is a fun, creative, relaxing, and “gezellige” society that is there to release students’ notorious stress levels. So join a few ArtCo workshops and let those creative juices flow. You do not need any background in art and you do not even really need much creativity. It is all about coming together with your friends and having a chat while making something. It will make you feel less guilty that you took a break when you have something to show for it!

The informal, fun, and relaxing setting should make it easy to go and check them out. Also… They have cookies!!!

So go to the ArtCo workshops, I say, when you need an outlet for all those high stress levels and games are not really your thing. If however, you do not feel that creative and you are sure finger-painting is as far as your Picasso-esque abilities will go, then do go and check out GamesCo (they have cookies too…).
