Madelon Engels for HAC Koestraat Campus Elder

By Tsjalline Boorsma

Madelon is a fourth-semester from Uithoorn, a small village near Amsterdam. She is 19 years old, but she will actually be turning 20 on day of the Election GA. The birthday present she is hoping for is becoming campus elder of Koestraat.

Why did you decide to run for Koestraat Campus Elder?

I am already floor elder of the third floor and I really enjoy it. Then some friends told me I would be a really great campus elder. When I thought about it, I got really excited and thought: “Yes! Why not?”

What kind of changes do you have in mind for Koestraat?

I think the safety of the campus is something that every campus elder should have as their main goal. I would for example like to replace the front door, which is not really secure anymore. I am making a list of all inhabitants of Koestraat, including their phone numbers, so I can contact them in case of emergency, such as a fire.

Besides safety, a good atmosphere at the campus is also very important to me. I am currently decorating the third floor common room: repainting the walls, ordering new lights and building a picture frame.

I would like to create more of a family feeling in Koestraat. For instances, if new students move in, it would be great if there is someone who can make them feel welcome and where they can go to if they have questions. As a campus elder, I would keep track of which rooms have new students, so I can check up on them. I am already called the grandmother of the third floor and I would love to spread my love to the entire Koestraat!

Which qualities do you think you can bring to the General Board of HAC?

I am very enthusiastic and energetic and open for new ideas. For example, I really like the idea of Campus Olympics. I would love to cooperate with the other campus elders on organising such activities. I am also full of ideas myself. But I am also very serious and I know how to communicate professionally. So I think I would also be a very good link between the campus and Villex.

Anything else you want to say?

I am super excited for the elections!
