Serenitea: organic, vegan and homely

Serenitea is a charming coffee, breakfast and lunch house in Middelburg. Located behind Profiel the bike shop, it took over the former kebab salon Saray and brought a completely different dynamic into play. Serenitea presents itself as a comfortable organic/local foods café, which wants to make the world a better place. They have a little boy who is always walking around the salon and spreading free affection, which can be honestly comforting in these harsh final weeks of the semester.

The food at Serenitea is surprisingly good. I am usually a bit skeptical when it comes to having vegan food in cafés because the preparations can get very tasteless. Don’t get me wrong, you can eat all types of meat at Serenitea, but the vegan dishes are personally my favorite ones of the permanent menu. In addition to that, they serve a daily menu, which for my part always tasted fresh and homely. On most evenings they are sadly closed, but they make a nice exception on Koopavonden (Thursday nights) and stay open till 20:00-20:30 depending on the customer flow. If you are planning on checking it out, I would personally advise to go out on a Thursday evening for dinner and ask them to mix everything they are offering and they will make you a very nice, mixed and full dinner out of that. You can get a lot of food and a nice vegan cake for a maximum of 14 euros per person. In fact, these dinners are better than any ones I have had in the many infamous Middelburg restaurants…

The deserts are very original. They are not the typical Dutch/buttery super-filling cakes, but still nurturing while remaining healthy. However, the deserts can get a bit expensive, which is something to keep in mind.

Additionally, you might have seen Serenitea’s sign at the beginning of the street saying they have the best coffee in town. The coffee itself has a very good taste and a nice mini-cake on the side. However, I do hope you know by now the best coffee in town is found at Robuust. Or, for a cheaper alternative, go to Røst!

You can visit Seneritea at Graven 82, right here in Middelburg. The café is open from Monday till Saturday, between the hours of 08:00 and 17:00. For more information, check out their Facebook page: Serenitea Middelburg!
